The 1920s, Gonave, a small Haitian island in the Caribbean Sea. A colonial invasion is underway, a road is being built over the jungle, its construction taking a harsh toll among the local workers. Marine Sergeant Faustin Wirkus, a friend of the island queen Ti-Memenne, plays island administrator. Persuaded by Ti-Memenne, he attempts to publicize the island inhabitants’ ordeal. He contacts a journalist – William Seabrook. When William Seabrook arrives, his attention is swiftly drawn to something other than the ongoing colonial investments on Gonave. Accompanying Wirkus for a time on the island, Seabrook does a photo shoot of Wirkus and Ti-Memenne in local costumes, documenting their life on the island, recording the story of Wirkus – a miner, a son of Polish immigrants, lured into the army with the promise of a better life. Seabrook writes a propaganda piece in which he describes Wirkus as a local hero, bringing enlightenment to the backwards island. Faustin Wirkus is caught up in this journalistic manipulation and his relationship with Ti-Memenne falls apart.
